Country Fried Chicken Breakfast from Mama’s 39th Street Diner

Robb Gordon

Starved for some greasy spoon comfort food to subside the extreme white russian hangover I experienced from the night before, I turned my attention to Mama’s 39th Street Diner as I know they have some of the best biscuits & gravy in town.  The restaurant was dim for 11:00am, or was is that my eyes were squinting to keep the light from making me sick?  Regardless, I glanced at the menu trying to find my B&G when my eyes caught the Co"Mama Knows Best"untry Fried Chicken smothered in sausage gravy (BOOM!) with scrambled eggs, breakfast potatoes & toast.  I knew at that point that this dish had what I needed to help my find my kilter and possible spin me into a food coma soon after.  Either way, I was in.

The portions at Mama’s are huge no matter what you order, and this was no exception.  A full chicken breast fillet, hand breaded and fried followed by a hearty smothering of gravy over it.  Honestly, I didn’t think I could eat even a third of it, especially in my condition, yet I cleaned the plate leaving only the toast.  It was perfectly cooked, great amount of flavor and very filling.  They are open 24 hrs over the weekends, so its a perfect ending to those of you who like to tie one on and then consume 1800 extra calories at the end of the evening!  Mama knows best, which is why the Country Fried Chicken is a big seller!

*Also try the Mama’s Famous “Legal” Hash for you corned beef lovers.

Roast Beef & Mashed Potatoes @ Woodsweather Cafe and Bottoms Up Lounge

Robb Gordon

"Brown Gravy Heaven" Everyone loves a place that serves comfort food.  You know, those places that cook  it up “just like your mom used to make.”

Well if that is true, then I must have been deprived as a child because mom never dished it up and smothered it in gravy like The Woodsweather Cafe does! (still love ya mom!)

Located in the industrial West Bottoms at 1414 W. 9th in KCMO, the atmosphere is more truck stop diner than country kitchen.   The classic decor, snappy waitstaff, and cooks bellowing out orders from the back of the restaurant, you get the feeling that you are in a well-known, yet best kept secret of downtown Kansas City.     Already known for their breakfast, burgers and reubens, I decided to detour from my normal routine and go for a dish that I shall now and forever refer to as “Gravy Heaven on a Plate.”  The ingredients are quite simple:  shaved roast beef served on bread with homemade mashed potatoes, completely drowned in brown gravy.  The roast beef is very tender (think Arby’s but with better cuts of beef) and the gravy is simply amazing.  Its a hearty meal that comes with good service and a very reasonable price.
